Eighty-two more days and the Formula1 Grand Prix will be here in Singapore. September would be the month where Singapore will be hosting the 2015 Formula1 Grand Prix at the Marina Bay Street Circuit. And it is also during this time, Shell petrol stations will come out with a array of Lego collection toys to commemorate the Grand Prix. With posters and marketing campaigns, it is hard to miss the campaign that Shell is rolling out. My son would then be getting all excited, reminding me to pump the petrol at the stations and get the toys. This was what happened last year 2014 and knowing my son, his enthusiasm for the Lego toy collection this year would not be any different.
I can still remember last year when I nearly could not get him the last Lego toy collectible- A shell petrol tanker truck. It was an unforgettable experience of God’s love for me and my son. The shell petrol tanker truck was the last toy of the entire Formula1 collectible series and customers have only two weeks to get the toy. The normal requirement to be eligible to purchase the toy was to pump at least S$50 worth of petrol before you can purchase the toy. However, the requirement to be eligible for the last toy changed and I did not read the fine prints thinking it was the same requirement as before. Little did I know, the requirement was not to just pump a minimum of S$50 worth of petrol, but to pump V-Power- Shell’s most premium petrol. I went away disappointed when I was being told by the staff on this new requirement. The only option left for me was to use up my newly pumped petrol before coming again.
After a couple of days, my petrol finally depleted and I happily drove to one of the Shell petrol stations to refill my petrol. “Papa! Remember to pump petrol today ok?” My 6-year old son’s reminder of getting the collectible was always ringing inside my head. I parked beside a pump kiosk in the petrol station and saw a poster on the wall about the toy but this time with a FULLY REDEEMED sticker pasted across it. “Oh NO!!”, this cannot be true. I went into the station to confirm whether the toy is no longer available and indeed, the staff confirmed that their stock was out and told me to try another station. I searched on my GPS to get to the next nearest Shell petrol station. The next one was also the same. “FULLY REDEEMED”. My mind was thinking this could possibly be an island-wide situation. There is no way I am going to get the toy now. To make it worse, I only have enough petrol to try another one or two more petrol station before my petrol runs out.
My mind was racing. I was trying to find solutions. To break my promise to get the toy and see the extreme disappointment in my son’s face would break my heart. Sob. The possibility of getting the toy was so remote that I gave up trying to rely on my own humanly wisdom. My petrol was running out, the only option left for me was to rely on God. I prayed to God, telling him how much my son love him and how he always say he loves Jesus and that He needs to help me get this toy no matter what. Verses from The Word popped into my head to reaffirm my faith and prayer in this matter.
I searched for the next Shell station with my GPS and said, “Lord you are sovereign. I trust in You no matter what!” I drove with renewed confidence and continued to pray along the way. Within minutes, I went into the station and a poster with the words “FULLY REDEEMED” can be seen. However, somehow I just had to step into the shop and confirm with the cashier. The cashier looked at me and said, “The toy is fully redeemed but..” She hesitated for a while and I looked at her with renewed hope expecting her to give me some good news. “…I could give this one to you because a customer reserved this but it’s been three days and he did not come to collect it.” You cannot imagine the joy I had when I received this news. I was so happy I could have hugged her. I quickly accepted her offer lest she change her mind and went away with joy, amazement and awe for what the Lord has done for me. I felt the most amazing part of this all was The Lord already knew that I would come to this particular petrol station and prepared the toy for me way in advance. He opened the cashier’s heart to give up the reserved toy for me.
Our Lord is a Living God and He hears our prayers. Glory and praise be to Him forever and ever. Amen.
“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. “Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him! (Matthew 7:7-11 NIV)
“ ‘If you can’?” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for one who believes.” (Mark 9:23 NIV)
He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? (Romans 8:32 NIV)
Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. (1 Peter 5:7 NIV)
Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. (Mark 11:24 NIV)
